Mark of Westminster Chess Pieces are the paradigm of perfection in wood staunton chess piece design. The premier chess pieces by Mark Of Westminster have been known for their heirloom quality. Each chess set is exclusive, with a printed certificate of authenticity that serves as a lifetime warranty for natural defect. Each chess piece is hand-carved, has felt-bottoms and extra queens.
The Tyrant Staunton Chess Pieces are some of the most exciting high luxury chessmen we've brought in to our store. This set features high quality, hand carved wooden pieces made of exotic woods with one very important disctinction that sets it apart from other high-end chess sets. Instead of the traditional bust of a horse for the knight, the Tyrant Staunton features a detailed, hand carved dragon. This piece features a wide open mouth with sharp teeth and two actual bone horns behind the head. Certainly, this is one of the most ferocious chess sets available. Additionally, these chess pieces come with three different finials for crosses so you can chose between a more standard cross, to the Mark of Westminster W, to a more fantastical design.
What might be best about the Tyrant Staunton is it's still a very playable set of chess pieces. The pieces are all easily recognizable, so you do not have the trouble you might find with other theme chess sets. These extremely well weighted chess pieces are Padouk and Boxwood, which are most often paired with Mahogany and Macassar chess boards, but will also go with most dark woods as well.
Padouk Chess Pieces vary from a light red to a deep red wine color, and is well regarded as one of the most exclusive exotic woods used for chess pieces. It is a hard wood, with a strong grain variation. The wide variety of colors make them quite unique, with the age of wood being the most common factor in the difference. This is a premier hardwood, compared most often in price to Ebony. Boxwood Chess Pieces are the near universal standard for 'white' chess pieces in hand-carved sets. It is a fairly easy wood to work with, and shows off good detail.
The Presidential luxury chess boards by Mark of Westminster are premier, furniture quality, real-wood veneer inlays. This style, available only through the Mark of Westminster line, is a quarter inch thicker than most other chess boards. Most noticeable, the Presidential Series has black beveled edging that brings added elegance without appearing too busy. It also a unique mosaic with maple, mahogany, and black that is not only stylish, but also brings in color that allows it to match well with virtually any chess set. These boards have felt-pad feet for protection of both the board and your own furniture. Less than 100 of these chess boards are produced each year, and each come with a certificate of authenticity with serial number.
Ebonized Birds Eye Maple is for the individual looking for a pure black board. The dark squares are lacquered black with a matte finish, which has no grain whatsoever. Birds Eye Maple is known to have a number of knots and curls which can sometimes be seen in the light squares. These boards complement all types of woods and pair particularly well ebonized or ebonywood chess pieces.
