Mark of Westminster Chess Pieces are the paradigm of perfection in wood staunton chess piece design. The premier chess pieces by Mark Of Westminster have been known for their heirloom quality. Each chess set is exclusive, with a printed certificate of authenticity that serves as a lifetime warranty for natural defect. Each chess piece is hand-carved, has felt bottoms, extra queens, and the signature Mark of Westminster Logo beneath the king.
These chess pieces are Crimson Rosewood and Boxwood, which are most often paired with Mahogany and Macassar chess boards, but will also go with most dark woods as well. Crimson Rosewood Chess Pieces vary from a light red to a deep red wine color, and is well regarded as one of the most exclusive exotic woods used for chess pieces. It is a hard wood, with a strong grain variation. The wide variety of colors make them quite unique, with the age of wood being the most common factor in the difference. This is a premier hardwood, compared most often in price to Ebony. Boxwood Chess Pieces are the near universal standard for 'white' chess pieces in hand-carved sets. It is a fairly easy wood to work with, and shows off good detail.
The Executive chess boards by Mark of Westminster are premier, furniture quality, real-wood veneer inlays. This style, available only through the Mark of Westminster line, maximizes the square to border ratio in order to fit a larger square on a smaller table. It also has a sharp black pinstripe, enabling the board to go with nearly any decor. Less than 100 of these chess boards are produced annually and each comes with a certificate of authenticity with serial number.
Mahogany is a light reddish color wood, displaying a beautiful reddish sheen when polished. It is often sought after for its use in various types of furniture. The grain is reported to be interlocked, often irregular in direction and sometimes very wild. Material containing wild grain is generally difficult to work to a smooth finish, so you will rarely see a dynamic graining in chessboards made with this wood. Due to considerable demand, many species are now protected.
