American themes are very popular in thematic chessmen, from the U.S. Revolution or Civil War to World War II, there have always been a large variety - not just focusing on american wars or conflicts in chess pieces, but also other classic Americana Themes, from the Wild West to Jazz Singers and Firemen and Police Officer Theme Sets. 
Medieval themes are perhaps the most popular style of figurine chessmen.
