Basic and Luxury Board Games – The Games of Your Move Chess & Games

Board Games at Your Move Chess & Games

It’s been several weeks since I’ve put up a post and I apologize – keep your eyes peeled on this spot. I have some great ideas for posts coming soon.

In the meantime, I wanted to take a break from chess to talk about the Games in “Your Move Chess & Games” – specifically board games.

First, a brief history. When I started working here back in the nineties, I was a kid in high school. The job was listed at a school job-board, and the idea of games sounded cool – so I applied and got the job the same day. I was always a ‘board game’ kid. I played everything from traditional board games like Monopoly to strategy board games like Risk and Axis & Allies. I was not, however, a Chess Player!

Your Move Chess & Games (The retail store name for ChessUSA) had dabbled a bit in some mind games, puzzles, cards, and other traditional games such as backgammon, mah-jong, go, cribbage, and so on. It might not have been the games I was familiar with, but it was still a lot of fun, and all went on just fine.

Over a decade later, I had returned to New York and found myself once again working with Your Move. At the time I was going through a bit of a board game renaissance myself and was picking up a lot of the unique harder-to-find strategy games that are on the market today. I had one experience where I wanted a game and had to take a trip to Manhattan to go to a game store and pick it up. Afterwards, I got to thinking. That’s ridiculous! I run a game store!

It did not take long after that for me to make the right connections and start bringing board games of all sorts to really add to the ‘games’ of Your Move Chess & Games. It’s absolutely fantastic to bring more of the gaming types you are passionate about to the place you work (There are several people here that have long time been chess players – I may know how to play, but i’m certainly not in their league!)

Today, it’s a great outlet for me to talk about something I am passionate about – but also a great way to learn about what is new in gaming. More than once a customer has come in to look for a game. We might not have it, but I want to hear all about it – there is nothing more exciting to me than to be introduced to another great game that brings people entertainment. Next thing you know we have a few copies on the shelves. I guess that’s how we doubled out board game collection in less than a year!

My wife and I are both gamers and we appreciate an outlet to get our gaming fix. This is not just for games from the big developers – It’s also to find both the smaller studios or kickstarted games, and also high end luxury board games for those of us who believe that traditional board games can be just as artistic and awesome as the most detailed set of carved chess pieces. For example, check out this monopoly set! It can certainly rival any high-end chess set!

That’s it for now. As I mentioned earlier, stay tuned. There are a lot of great chess and game articles on the way!
