This is the large Honey Rosewood and Boxwood version of the Earl design, and is best suited for 2" - 2 1/4" chess boards.
The very heavy Earl pieces are a fairly traditional Staunton design with emphasis on the knight. The knight has a well detailed main and perked, upright ears. The slightly open mouth shows the teeth of the horse, and the extended back gives the illusion of the piece being in motion.
These chess pieces are Honey Rosewood and Boxwood, which is often paired with Walnut, Teak, or other light to medium brown wood chess boards. This is the classic German Style, which has been a popular chess piece style for a century.
Honey Rosewood Chess Pieces are a soft, easy to work with light to medium brown wood. There is a fair amount of grain, and is an excellent choice if you want an inexpensive natural look.
Boxwood Chess Pieces are the near universal standard for 'white' chess pieces in hand-carved sets. It is a fairly easy wood to work with, and shows off good detail.
