This CD from Chessbase contains a database of over 630,000 games and the associated chess tree that goes with it. To get the most out of this CD, you'll have to use either Fritz 6 or Chessbase 7/8, so that you can view the included tree data, and access the newer Chessbase cbh format data files. Other non-chessbase programs that can read cbh will be able to access the game collection, but not the chess tree.
The tree shows information like success statistics, average rating of the players that play a particular move, how well the move scores, the percentage of time the move is played, etc. If you want a list of the games for a particular move, it is very easy to see (especially with Chessbase 8). If you have Fritz 6, it's a simple matter of using the "Find Position" command on the edit menu. If you are going to use this data a lot, then you may want to consider copying it to your hard drive, but make sure you have sufficient space (630 M).
People that are interested in this CD should note that there are no human evaluations, or variations in the tree, and the games are not annotated. The worth of a particular variation is based solely on its statistical performance. However, the games in the database are handpicked. So there is some human judgment involved - this means that only games from highly rated players are used, and games with obvious blunders are discarded.
You can use this CD as either a study aid, or as method for increasing Fritz's playing strength. I would guess that you can probably expect a very minor increase in playing strength. As far as a study aid is concerned, you can use the tree to study a particular variation, or to practice playing against in Fritz.
The database is quite current (as one would expect) with a high percentage of games from the 90's and beyond (including 2000). There are plenty of classics as well, but as with any collection of this sort, the emphasis is more on recent games than on older ones.
