This CD offering from Convekta contains a large collection of Alekhine’s games (very many of them annotated) in Chess Assistant format, along with a tutorial/quiz program. I would refer most readers to my previous review of the Mikhail Tal CD, which is nearly identical to this one in form and function. Of course, the game and quiz collections are totally differentJ
Many of you probably want to know whether you’ll be able to find all the games from "My Best Games of Chess". While I did not check for the presence of every game in the book, I did check a dozen or so, and they were all in the database. So odds are that if you are buying this CD as a book adjunct, there will be some annotated games relevant to your studies.
This CD contains 1300 games and about 200 quiz positions, with nearly all the games containing annotations of some sort. Overall, the games are not annotated at quite the same level as detail as the Tal CD. For instance, one thing I like about the Tal CD are the informant style annotations detailing plans and piece maneuvers. These are still present in Alekhine, but to a lesser extent. Fans of Alekhine should note that many of the games in this collection contain annotations by the master himself.
The only thing that might be nice to add for future game collections of this type is some short text on the player. This would make the CD seem more like a book. Although I would guess that some of the people reading this review know more than a little about Alekhine’s life, a little biography would still be a nice touch.
